The Wastewater Management Authority (WMA) has been established as a body corporate under the Wastewater Management Authority Act to be responsible for all matters relating to the collection, treatment and disposal of wastewater. It operates as an autonomous organisation under the aegis of the Ministry of Renewable Energy and Public Utilities.

The WMA thus plays a vital role in the protection of the environment and in ensuring the country's sustainable development by the provision of appropriate water pollution standards, wastewater control systems and management services to the entire population of Mauritius.
